I was born in 1961 in Darwin, the fourth daughter of respected local couple Alec and Norma Fong Lim. Alec was a businessman who eventually became a very popular Lord Mayor in the 1980s. I completed my primary and secondary education in Darwin, matriculating from Darwin High School in 1979. I was an American Field Service Exchange Student to the USA.
My first job was with the Commonwealth Public Service. Over 13 years I worked for various Departments including Finance, Customs, Defence, Community Services and Social Security. During this time I acquired many different skills including public sector management, legislative interpretation, project management, information dissemination and client service. I completed a Bachelor of Business with a double major in Marketing and Human Resource Management from the University of Southern Queensland by external studies. I also lived in Melbourne and Toowoomba before returning home to Darwin in 1986.I left the Public Service to work in the not for profit sector, seeking to fulfil my need to contribute to our community. I have worked in this sector for 20 years including at the YWCA, Crafts Council, NT Centenary of Federation and the Australia Day Council NT. During this period of time I also completed a Cert IV in Work place Training and Assessment and a Master of Professional Accounting.
A couple of years ago, with the permission of the Board, I commenced a small business initially delivering Financial Management Training to builders through the Master Builders Association NT. While providing the training I have had many discussions about the issues and pressures that small business face.
I live with my second husband Tony Waite. We married in 2001 and live in Nightcliff. My five sisters and mother remain my strongest supporters and influence. I also cannot underestimate the continuing influence my father, the late Alec Fong Lim has had on my life. His values, ethics and firm belief in the community in which we live has stood me in good stead.
